Ninth ID5 Annual Meeting Held
-Design Protection in the Metaverse Discussed-

The 9th Annual Meeting of the Industrial Design 5 (ID5) Offices, which include Japan, the United States, Europe, China and Korea, was held in Incheon, Korea on September 14, 2023. Mr. Nonaka, Director-General of the Patent and Design Examination Department, attended the Meeting from the 88av 888 (JPO).

The meeting attendees began by reviewing progress, and discussing how to proceed with, the 12 cooperative projects. The ID5 Offices then confirmed that they would continue strengthening international cooperation in design protection, as well as harmonizing future international design system operations.

The ID5 User Session was held the following day, on the 15th, for user representatives from industry groups and agent organizations. In relation to the cooperative project "Protection of Digital Design in the Metaverse", user representatives made presentations* on the introduction of design development trends and opinions on legal issues for designs in the metaverse, and also exchanged opinions between users and ID5 Office members.

In addition, the ID5 Offices reached a consensus that the JPO would host the ID5 Meeting in 2024.

The JPO will continue to promote the ID5 initiatives in order to create an environment in which designs can be more appropriately protected and utilized around the world.

* A report summarizing user presentations, and the possibility of protecting digital designs via the design rights of each ID5 Office, will be published on the ID5 website.
