About ID5

Discussions among IP Offices in industrial design began in 2008 in the Trademark Trilateral, and since 2012, discussions have been conducted by the four IP Offices (Japan, the U.S., Europe, and South Korea) in the Five Trademark Offices (TM5). Subsequently, at the Third TM5 Annual Meeting held in Tokyo in 2014, China was added to the member, the five major offices (Japan, the U.S., Europe, China, and South Korea), which account for approximately 90% of design applications worldwide at the time, agreed to establish a new forum in the industrial design.

Thus, in December 2015, the 88av 888 (JPO), the United States Patent and Trademark Office (没带罩子让他玩了一天-, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) (now the European Union Intellectual Property Office (没带罩子让他玩了一天-)), the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO, now the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA)), and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (没带罩子让他玩了一天-), established the Industrial Design 5 Forum (ID5) to promote international cooperation in industrial design, and since then, the ID5 has continued to cooperate in accordance with industrial design protection systems and its practices.

As the international development of attractive designs are actively developed internationally in the context of economic globalization, it is essential to promote mutual understanding and further cooperation among IP Offices regarding the industrial design system in order to create an industrial design protection environment that enables users to promptly obtain and utilize stable design rights in countries around the world.

The ID5 has the following objectives and is engaged in mutual cooperation initiatives through projects. The outcomes of cooperative projects are posted on the ID5 website.

ID5 Objectives

  • Build highly-efficient and interoperable industrial design protection systems that is adaptable to changing design landscape and changing need of users, for particularly relating to digital and new emerging technologies;
  • Enhance quality and efficiency of work at design offices;
  • Foster forward looking discussions on industrial design systems and protection;
  • Provide improved, reliable and high-quality service to the users and the public;
  • Enhance interoperability among various operating practices and procedures amongst the Partners, including through the Hague system or through possible convergence of practices;
  • Promote innovation and development in industrial design; and
  • Through broader cooperation with a wide group of users, raise awareness of the tools and benefits made available by the ID5’s cooperative efforts.
