The WIPO Regional Meeting of Heads of Intellectual Property (IP) Offices of Caribbean Countries was held in St. Kitts and Nevis on November 2-3, 2023 with the aim of bringing together the heads of the IP offices of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) *1 member countries to discuss intellectual property systems that are beneficial to the development of the region’s economies. JPO Commissioner, Mr. HAMANO delivered opening remarks via video message.

The meeting was held supported by voluntary contributions (WIPO Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global) from Japan to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

In the opening remarks, Commissioner HAMANO noted that in order to realize the theme of the meeting, "Innovation to Prosperity", it is necessary to enhance measures and services that respond to changes in social and industrial structure, such as digitalization of the IP offices and adequate support for small and medium-sized enterprises and startups to engage in active economic activities. He also expressed his expectations for advancement in innovations in the Caribbean countries.

The JPO will continue to promote cooperation with the CARICOM countries through the WIPO Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global to support the economic development and the creation of an environment where intellectual properties are properly protected in the CARICOM countries.

  • *1 Community consisting of 14 Caribbean countries and 1 territory (Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Montserrat (British Overseas Territory).
