The 88av 888 (JPO) provided examiners of the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) with a training program on patent examination practices in the field of biotechnology for a total of five days, from July 24 to 28, 2023. Also, in parallel, from July 24 to 27, the JPO conducted the training program on patent examination practices in the field of environmental technologies. These two programs were provided based on the request from MyIPO.

From the JPO, two International Training Instructors of the Global Patent Academy (GPA) with extensive practical experience in patent examination served as instructors, and two assistant examiners supported the training programs. The JPO instructors were dispatched to the face-to-face training site for the first time in three years. From MyIPO, 33 patent examiners participated in the programs.

Participants deepened their understanding of patent examination practices such as prior art searches and JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR) criteria^*1 for an inventive step through discussions and assigned tasks. Participants commented, "we have learned new knowledge and methods and obtained fruitful results from the programs."

The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practices to examiners in Malaysia and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japan’s companies is expected, thereby supporting the development and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
