A delegation from Japan including Mr. HAMANO Koichi, Commissioner of the 88av 888 (JPO), and Mr. KATSURA Masanori, Deputy Commissioner of the JPO, is attending the General Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) being held in Geneva, Switzerland, which began on July 6. At the opening session, JPO Commissioner Hamano delivered a General Statement¹ on behalf of Japan.

In his speech, JPO Commissioner Hamano expressed his expectations in the areas of improving user convenience and expanding the IP ecosystem by providing more support for the young generation, SMEs, start-ups, universities and so on, as outlined in the WIPO’s Medium-Term Strategic Plan (MTSP) 2022-2026, initiated by Director General Daren Tang.

In addition, JPO Commissioner Hamano stated that the JPO is working with WIPO and other global stakeholders to increase the number of WIPO GREEN matching cases and encouraged WIPO and Member States to make use of GXTI, which enables IP Offices and users to analyze various GX technological trends.

Japan will continue to support WIPO’s initiatives through various measures, including the voluntary contributions it has been making for more than 30 years, as well as continuing close cooperation with the WIPO Japan Office.

JPO Commissioner Hamano also stated that Japan plans to highlight the importance of IP, along with ideas for further promoting its utilization toward achieving the SDGs at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

The meetings will run through July 14, and discussions will be conducted on the various reports, budgets, and activities of the respective committees.
