On May 29-30, 2023, a conference titled "Thinking about Industrial Property, Sustainability and the Future of the Planet" was held in Lisbon, Portugal and was attended by Mr. MAEDA, Director-General of the Patent Examination Department (Chemistry, Life Science and Material Science).

The conference addressed the role of intellectual property in addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations. It was organized by the Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO), and other related organizations.

The proceedings began with speeches given by Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO; Mr. António Campinos, President of EPO; and Ms. Catarina Sarmento e Castro, Minister of Justice of Portugal.

Mr. MAEDA joined the roundtable discussion moderated by Mr. José Graça Aranha, WIPO's Special Representative on SDGs, wherein he discussed the SGDs-related initiatives of individual offices together with the following speakers:
Mr. Telmo Vilela, Principal Adviser to the President and Representative for Institutional Affairs of the EPO,
Mr. Heetae Kim, Director-General of the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO),
Mr. Lu Pengqi, Deputy Commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA),
Mr. Charles Eloshway, Senior Patent Counsel of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO),
and Ms. Jessica Patterson, Director of the USPTO.
Mr. MAEDA introduced the Green Transformation Technologies Inventory (GXTI) ^*1 as a JPO's initiative.

JPO will continue to promote efforts related to the SDGs while also engaging in international cooperation within this field.
